Exclamation Fuel Cap Leaking

Hi,

Went down to my car today and noticed a strong smell of petrol and could also see it all over the road so I removed my fuel cap and out gushed a load of petrol all down the side of my car and onto the road. I then did the cap up again and opened it again and whoosh, out more comes.

When I filled up on Wednesday when I tried to put the cap on it felt different but I went to my car yesterday and everything seemed fine.

The only thing I can see is when I take the fuel cap off there is like a green opening which looks like it isn't covering everything so the fuel is escaping, for now I have turned my car the other way on the drive so none is leaking out.. so at the moment not sure what is going on :S

It is a 98 Ford Fiesta.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Re: Fuel Cap Leaking

Sounds like you are having a build up of pressure due to the fuel tank not breathing properly . Would be advisable to check tank breather hose / vent pipe / filler neck and also cap seal .

Re: Fuel Cap Leaking

I'd start cheap and replace the fuel cap for a few bucks.
