confused jerky ka power steering

Hi all, i am new to this site, and based in the UK, but hope someone will be kind enough to help me. I have just bought a 1999 1300cc KA. The steering is power assist and is very jerky when driving when turning lock to lock. I checked the reservoir and it seemed to be swirling very fast. So i jacked up the car and ran engine whilst turning steering thinking it was air in the system, but this made no difference. The rack itself seems ok, as the car will turn lock to lock while in the air without engine running quite smoothly. I noticed a valve type thing on the rack with an electrical connection, does anyone know what this is for. Any help would be really appreciated as i am pulling my hair out-well i would if i had any. cockneyjohn

Re: jerky ka power steering

The switch you mention is a pressure switch to alter idling on a full lock and is unlikely to be your problem- sounds more like the universal joint on the bottom of the column.

Reply to Fordtech on this problem. I checked the joint at the bottom of the steering column as you suggested, and found it to be quite rusty. So i sprayed it with wd40, turned it a few times lock to lock. Then did the same with spray grease. Hey presto! i now have steering. Thanks for the advise. cockneyjohn.
