I've had a KA since 2006 and done about 60 000 km in it. My wife seldom drives it but has complained about sometimes finding it difficult to get into first gear after stopping.

I've never noticed this myself until last week when I stopped in traffic and then found I couldn't get into either first or second. The clutch just went straight to the floor and felt as though it wasn't connected to anything.

After a few long seconds I was able to force it into first and have had no further trouble since apart from a bit of apprehension that it was going to happen again in a possibly more dangerous situation.

Before I risk my wallet at the local Ford agent can anybody suggest how the clutch can fail to operate very occasionally?

Have a look under the gearbox, if it appears wet it's possible the clutch slave cylinder is on its way out. If not, probably the master cylinder.
