Ka engine 'hesitant' when A/C is on

Hi,

I have just acquired a 1999 'V' plate Ka Millenium with about 50,000 miles on the clock and have a problem I would like some advise with, please.

The is when accelerating in 3rd/4th/5th with the A/C switched on. The engine seems to hesitate and distinctly lack power, especially when going up hills.

While the engine is hesitating, if the A/C is switched off, the engine suddenly gets its power back. Switching the A/C back on again, the engine hesitates again.

Other than this proble, the car is in very good order with a full Ford service history in the UK.

Has anyone experienced this problem before, and suggest a likely cause, please?

Yes that's pretty much the way they are, sadly- such a small engine with a big compressor which is a drag on the engine. Bigger engines still suffer but not as bad- smaller you go, the worse it gets.

I have to concur with fordtech, you really notice the difference with A/C on or off on my 1.25 Duratec powered Fiesta. You get used to it after a while, and if you are planning an overtake (which DO require careful planning), I often switch the A/C off for the manoeuvre!

I believe (although correct me if I am wrong), the system will shut off temporarily if demands on the engine become too great – I presume for very long and steep inclines, etc.

Yes the A/C has a cut-off which comes in when you apply full throttle.

Now I know the reason, I can enjoy the car without worrying if it's going to breakdown everytime I accelerate!
