Smile Poorly Fiesta 1.8 Diesel

Hi! This is my first attempt at anything like this, so bare with me. Its also the first time ive owned a ford. I've just bought a 1996 Ford Fiesta 1800 diesel (non turbo). Its a very low milage 53000, for its age so ive been told. The only problem is its a bit of a sod to start. A friend of mine who is a mechanic has had a look in the inlet manifold and it contained greesy black sludge, there was clouds of grey/white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The car does run, but it does this kinda lumpy. If any one has any idea as to what it might be or, any idea what could be causing this, I would be grateful. I don't know anything about engines, but I have a good friend who is a mechanic, so i can pass any information on to him. Thanks in antisapation to any one who responds.
Cheers

I have the same car. Mine is also sometimes a sod to start, could possibly be the glow plugs? Maybe also need a new battery.

Sounds like the pump timing is out, I'd get the belts looked at.
