Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

Hi i have got a problem with my Ford Fiesta Flight MK4 1.3i EFI,if i am stationary and i rev the car quite high in the rpm range when the engine is coming back down to idling rpm it sometimes stalls or judders and nearly stalls, so basically its like its going straight past idling rpm and just cutting out. I have tried taking the air filter out to see if it needed a new air filter but no luck there, i havent checked the spark plugs yet so i think i should check those to see if they are the problem, but when i bought the car it hadnt been used for a while so maybe it just needs a good thrashing to get the s**t out the system maybe?
Any help will be greatly appreciated as it is going for an MOT soon
Regards,Sean

There was a problem with the throttle position sensor and wiring on this engine, even so it really needs a diagnostic check to see what codes are stored.

Re: Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

i have just put some redex treatment through my engine and i gapped the spark plugs aswell... wasnt happy with the 1.3mm setting stated in the book, was trying to stall, misfiring when in 3rd gear.

i think they are set on about 0.9-1mm now and it seems to be working fine. so see what condition your plugs are in and check the gap

Re: Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

On the 1.3 Endura Engine it's supposed to be 1.1mm gap(1.3mm on other Fiesta engines).

I have been trying everything and have the same trouble. I have changed the plugs, filters (air & oil), leads, cleaned the silver thing on the front of the efi and other things. The car runs ok for a while and then back to square one. It misfires whilst driving and cuts out at lights/junctions/roundabouts. Took it to Ford and they found nothing. I have had a tit full.

Re: Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

Hi guys
For 1.3L Engines, there's a 16 pin wiring connector that develops high resistance and corrupts this signal before it gets to the PCM. The main thing this causes is the rpm will be erratic during gearchanges (ie: stay high, stall, etc). No dtcs will be logged because as far as the PCM is concerned that's the way you're driving your car. There's a simple by-pass we used to do that fixes this problem for good IF you can confirm that the signal coming out of your TPS is good. Let me know if you're interested and I'll post it for you. Cheers
marc

Re: Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

Hi guys
Here it is. Remember, this is a last resort kinda thing. Be absolutely sure that your TPS is not actually faulty before you do this and check for codes to make sure that nothing else is to blame. cheers

Re: Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

How did the modification go?

I've just put up a new thread 'unreliable fiesta' and thought our problems seemed [i]fairly[i] related.

ps hello everyone!

Re: Problem with my fiesta mk4 (stalls and nearly stalls etc)

Have you guys tried checking the Oxygen Sensor? its positioned on the exhaust manifold right at the front and top of the engine bay.

I had issues with intermitent juddering at low revs, and stalling after high revs as well. Simply checking the connector revealed corrosion on the pins, and after a bit of cleaning then all seems well. The connector is an unsealed type and therefore can suffer from the elements over the years. I know its a simple fix, but well worth a try. Also meant my fuel consumption returned to normal after it was running far to rich.

The sensor itself is difficult to remove, and the engine needs to be hot to have any chance. However, to test functionality then simply unplug, rev the engine and you will hear the engine struggle as it returns to idle. Re-connect and all should return to normal (its a closed loop control system....and all that jazz....).
