Strong sales of the new Ford Fiesta fuelled further growth in Ford's European market share during March, up 0.4 points at 9.6 per cent. First quarter figures for 2003 also underlined Ford's resurgence.

The Fiesta is now hot on the heels of Ford's most consistently successful model, the Ford Focus, with more than 42,000 registrations in Europe during March alone, 16,300 more than in the same month of 2002.

Total Ford vehicle sales in Europe increased for both the month and first quarter and the improved market share was supported by specific gains in Germany, France and Italy – plus record market share levels in Poland and Greece.

Ford’s share of the European vehicle market in the first quarter was 9.2 percent – a 0.2 point improvement over the first three months of 2002. Market share improved for both Ford commercial vehicles and cars, especially the Fiesta, which achieved an overall market share of 2.4 per cent – up 0.5 points on the first quarter of 2002. Total vehicle retail sales in March were 181,300 units, four percent above prior year.

The first quarter sales figures confirm the Fiesta's success, a total of 96,200 units sold, compared with 77,000 in the same period of last year, and the 250,000th new Fiesta was produced at Cologne on April 2.

The Focus remained Ford’s most successful model in Europe, with 134,300 units sold in the first three months of 2003.

Earl Hesterberg, Vice President Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe commented: “January to March 2003 was the best quarter for Ford Fiesta sales since its launch at the beginning of last year. With the three-door version now on sale in most of Ford’s European markets and the well accepted Ford Fusion also now widely available, our small car range continues to gain strength. The Ford Fiesta and the Ford Fusion are the major contributors to Ford’s share growth in Europe so far this year."
