TDCi Starting Problem

I have a 2005 1.4 TDCi which has a strange problem. Usually it will not start first thing in the morning or if it has been standing for a couple of hours. You have to bleed out the air from the diesel using the small hand pump under the bonnet, once started the car is fine and will turn off and start all day long. A mechanic told me that there was probably a one way valve in the fuel line somewhere which prevented the diesel draining back and this had become faulty, he said it was highly unlikely to be the fuel pump as these rarely fail. Is there a valve and if so where is it? Would it be easy to change or would I need to take it to a garage? Many thanks guys.
