UK: Ford Ka best for repair bills

Channel4.com

The Ford Ka has been named as Britain's cheapest car to repair by insurer Warranty Direct. The Ka costs just £86 to get back on the road when it breaks down, while just 22 of 100 Ka owners needed repairs in the first place. Although no other cars came in at under £100 to fix, cheap menders included the last generation Volkswagen Polo (£104) and Volvo S40/V50 (£114). Notable among the top ten was the Mazda Mx-5 roadster, which, whilst costing £134 to repair, troubled just 8 percent of its owners by breaking down. The 1993-2000 Renault Clio had similarly impressive stats. Most cars made from 2000 on still have much of their manufacturer's warranty to run, and so didn't register on the survey.

Top of the heavy hitters was the 1993-2000 model-year Subaru Impreza, which costs a whopping £1623 to fix on average, with around a quarter needing some form of repair. Amazingly, half of Jeep Cherokee owners will need to leave their cars in the workshop, and when they do, should expect a £700 bill. Other mechanic's darlings were the Saab 9000 and Ford Scorpio.

The company claims Britons spent £1.6bn last year fixing their cars, with the average bill coming in at £143. Despite the Scorpio's poor performance, Ford came out on top of the manufacturers' honour roll with an average bill of £195. Three of its current line-up graced the top ten. Subaru, it may come as no surprise, came in last, with average bills of £1146.
