17" or 18" for XR8?

Are tyre costs for 18" much dearer than 17" and will the ride on 18" be harsher? tested the xr8 with 17" and loved the ride.

i got an au2 xr8 ute,it had standard 17's,235/45/17's.With the 17's it rode quite well.tho over bumps it was harsh, due to the stiff suspension. I now got 18's on it,245/40/18, with the narrower sidewalls its much more stiffer and it really hates bumps, even tho its still stock suspension. Tyre prices vary depends what you buy,the factory dunlop sp 9000 are noisey, but very grippy and very expensive, around $450 per tyre for 18'
I bought kumho 712's for the 18's,cost me $280 per tyre, they quiet but not as grippy as the dunlops.

If you can afford the rubber.. Go the 18's mate.

Makes bugger all difference to the ride in a BA XR. Plus they look better!

And get 5 of them, $380 is worth it for the tyre alone.

I have looked at the Ford site configure & price section and they don't show 18's as an option.

Is this an error or are 18's not available anymore?

I'd get the stockers & get larger aftermarket rims personally if you are spending the extra money you might as well stand out rather then blend in with the other XRs around

I agree with Mr Jucy - go aftermarket. The only problem with that is that you will have to sell the 17s. Perhaps you could get the dealer to organise aftermarket 18s before you pick the car up, using the 17s as a trade, just paying the difference in price?

The noise/harshness in the suspension between the AU and BA cars on 18's cant be compared, the BA is far superior. l doubt you will notice much difference between 17's and 18's on the BA either.

The ride of the XR on 18's is remarkable. Depends on if you prefer the looks to pay the extra money to buy the rims and then the replacement tyres down the track. 18's are becoming more common so the price of tyres is dropping. In todays price l think you are looking at 1300-1600 for a good set of tyres, maybe 1000 for 17".

As for stock or aftermarket 18s, that depends on if you prefer to stay stock or like the aftermarket look. If you go aftermarket you may be able to find rims that are lighter than those used by Ford so that may be a big benefit to be looking aftermarket.
