I am looking for a bit of a cheap run around car at the moment while I am studying and I have noticed that there are quite a few cheap 351 XD Falcons around. I was just wondering what they are like as far as quality, performance and potential are concerned. Also are they reliable engines? I have had no experience with 351's or XD's so any info you can tell me would be appreciated.

yep clevos in xd's are a lethal combo.
my mate has one and it runs 12's, there are a cpl in perth running 10's N/A so plenty of potential.
alot of ppl will argue a 351 is one of the best engines made. they are very reliable, but make sure you have a good radiator. Look out for rust to.

XD 351 Cars may be cheap but you first have to think why they are cheap. I had a XD 351 ute and I must say was one of the best cars I have owned but that came at a price. Going on experience I'd say a standard XD 351 is ok but you might run into problems with it if its a bit run down in the engine department and also chassis department( prob find alot of rust in the bottom sills, that a common thing with them). But if you want to spend $1000's and $1000's on them they are one of the best cars you will ever own.

Just wondering what are the chances I would find a manual? I would really prefer a manual than an auto and it will save me money later on when I decide to spend a bit on it. Also what are the common modifications done to a clevo 351 to get them really rockin?

its hard to find an manual, well it was here (penrith , blue mountains area) so i settled for a 3 speed auto fairmont ghia
sold it now though
but was a great first car to run around in, especailly with a nice loud exhaust

I had a 351 in my XF and it was heaps of fun to drive. It was only auto but If i planted the right foot it would light the rears everytime. Was good for sideways action.
It was a killer on petrol though. I ended up selling it cheap because the petrol costs were too high for it to be driven every day. I was doing about 400kms a week and spending about $120 on petrol. If you drive it easy it would be alot better but that is too boring. They sound to good to not put the boot in.
