I got in to an arguement today with someone who works for me over whether my car would beat his from a standing start (ie - at the lights). I don't really race people except occasionally to try and get around someone sitting in the better lane at the lights, so I really don't know what the capabilities of my car in this area are. So tell me... was I speaking out my arse in this arguement?

My car is a basically stock 1989 EA S Pac 5 speed manual. His car is an auto 1999 Holden Apollo. What do you think?

dood u woudl have a hard time, mainly cos the commys accellerat quicker then a falcon, but i think if u tried hard u wold cain his arse.

i dont think an apollo is a commodore is it ?

i thought an apolo was like a ford meteor, or corsair ?

Yea, I thought Apollos were those shitty little cars, surely there is no way one of them would beat a Falcon????

I think the holden apollo is the same as the toyota camry. Didn't holden swap the VN to toyota where it was called the Lexcen, where toyota gave their camry to holden, who called it the apollo? Correct me if im wrong here.

An Apollo is exactly the same as a Camry except with a Holden badge...

Thats the funniest thing I heard all day.
Yeah, the Apollo is the same as a Toyota Camry.
To boot, I dont think Holden had the V6 option that the Toyota's had.

So let me picture this one.
A 4Cyl, 4 speed auto Vs a 3.9 MPEFI 5 speed Manual.
Tell the guy to make it more even, you will only use reverse gear !

Even Best case scenario.
V6 5Speed Appollo vs 3.9MPEFI 5 speed Manual Falcon
I think the Falcon would win, as the Toyota's are geared more for fuel economy, than quick ball tearing acceleration.

I think the guy has been watching too many Toyota commercials !!

My bad... just called the guy to gloat I'd checked my figures... turns out it's an Astra, not an Apollo. From what I can tell it's still a 4 cyl, 4 sp Auto. I believe it's actually also the 2000 Olympic Edition.

There was an Apollo V6 - the difference was that in those days, Toyota made a big deal of using the 'Vienta' badge (Spanish for 'wind'... implying whisper quiet, etc - which is true in this case) to distinguish the V6 models, whereas in later years only the upmarket V6 models were called Vienta.

As for the Astra, I have a quoted figure from Wheels of 11 seconds 0-100. Quite reasonable for a car of its type, but I think even my car would be significantly faster.
