I am looking at buying an AU II manual XR8 ute, after previously owning a manual ED & manual EL XR6 I am waring as they both suffered problems with a weak firewall which had the clutch cable pulling its way through.

Was this problem fixed with the AU series? If not I will have to go with an auto.

Cant say for sure but I think they fixed it with the AU. Well put it this way, I haven't heard of this problem in the AU but have heard of it with the Eseries cars.. hope this helps..
