AU XR6 Vs BA XT

Im looking at getting a new (to me) car in the next little while. I am looking at about 20ish grand and I would like less than 50K on the clock. I think it will probably come down to either a BA XT or an AUII/III XR6 VCT.

Either way, I will probably buy some rims (I dont want to look like everyone else on the road), especially if I go the BA option.

I know the BA engine is a little better but I would have to spend extra money putting XR6 suspension in there. Any idea what this would cost?

The other thing going for the AU's is that I can get a manual. still hard to find but a hell of a lot easer than in BA's. The BA's do look better, but the AU is really growing on me (plus there are less of them on the road).

Just after some input into the decision from those that know more than me.

Re: AU XR6 Vs BA XT

Id go for the BA XT Ford didn't spend 500mill on nothing, with that said you get more power you have the best from both world's trip tronic, for 20k you could find a futura.

But the main factor in choosing is "what do you want?" as it is you who will keep the car in the long run??

Re: AU XR6 Vs BA XT

Hmmm - tough call between those 2. For low $20ks, I'd get an AU2 or AU3 XR8 with the 220kw Windsor. Sounds great, goes well, will hold its value better than a BA XT and should make you smile every time you drive it. Its what I'd have if I didn't stretch to an XR6T!

Could get a good AU xr6 for mid to high teens. The VCTs were slower than the HPs because of their more sophisticated but heavier rear suspension, so don't limit yourself to a VCT.

Re: AU XR6 Vs BA XT

yeah an XR8 would be great, even if the sound was the only improvment, but fuel consumption is an issue (just loan repayments will stretch me), as well as rego.

Speaking of fuel, what sort of consumption would expect from an XR6 (VCT or not).

Also, this might be a dumb question, but what does HP stand for?

Cheers

mate, I usually get around 450-500ks per tank from my au2 xr6 hp. I'm pretty sure that the HP stands for High Performance but don't quote me on that one.

Hey mate,

The HP is for High Performance because the XR6 HP engine had a bit more power then the standard 6.

Standard AU 157kw
AU XR6 HP 164kw
AU XR6 VCT 172kw
BA DOHC VCT 182kw

I drove an Auto AUI XR6 VCT with 60000kms before I bought my BA and this thing was like new etc. But it felt slow, I expected it to be faster them my old EL but it did not feel much faster. It was a lot nicer to drive then the EL and the engine felt a lot more refined.

On the other hand the BA feels a lot faster and stronger then the AU, because it is. The BA has a lot of bottom end punch and just goes from word go. And it feels nothing like an AU, it is a much nicer car to drive.

I get about 550 to 600km out of a tank of ULP. But it all depends on how you drive it and if or not you do a lot of city driving. I do about 70/30 highway/city. On the other hand I know some people who only get 400-500kms out of a tank. It all depends on how you drive and where you drive.

My money would be on the BA. You should be able to get a nice one for under $20k. A nice clean 03 Futura if you look hard enough!

I would not worry much about "XR6" suspension, if you want it to look better then just change the springs and they are cheap to do. Can get all new Super Low springs from under $500 fitted, this will make it look better and handle better too. And a nice set of 18's and you will be set.

Good luck!

Re: AU XR6 Vs BA XT

I've never driven an AU XR6, but have driven many Falcon rentals and currently lease a BA XR6. The BA is simply a much better drive than the AU in every way - if it was my money, I'd certainly go for a BA XT.

Don't know if you can afford one, but I've heard that the "sleeper" of the BA range is the XT V8. They come with the same semi-sports suspension as the Fairmont Ghia so handle better than standard 6s.

Weren't the AU internals upgraded to refine it over previous models ???

Same here (prior to cam change).

The AU got a bad rap from the word go. I never thought I'd buy an AU but I did and I love the car.

Re: AU XR6 Vs BA XT

The BA and AU are both nice cars. It will be hard finding AU Manuals with less than 50,000 Km.

I would be more tempted by a BA as most have factory warranties and better saftey features such as up to 4 airbags. There maybe some BA XT 5.4 manuals around for less than a BA XR6, they only use a little more fuel, that would be my choice. Slightly lowered with nice exhaust they would sound and look fantastic. An XT 5.4 manual will be quite rare too.

An AU will be cheaper and is still allot of car for the money. The AU XR6 with independant suspension would be very nice. Even with 100,000 Km there will be plenty of life left.

Re: AU XR6 Vs BA XT

I have found the BA suspension to be quite good in standard form. Very compliant and almost "idiot proof". The control blade rear end is a great thing. I think the Au rear is different altogether, dont know there werent a lot made with IRS.
