And what's this http://groups.msn.com/HudsonMotorCar...to&PhotoID=337 later than the Ford ute but strange and noteworthy nonetheless. Can't see it catching on today either though.

Re: The Aussie Ute

Ford Australia designed and built the first commercially made ute in the world. As for who invented it, who knows but is was not Ford or Holden or Chev or Chrysler (keep adding all car brands).
The ute concept was around well before the Ford utes were produced.
Existing passengers cars were converted into ute type vehicles long before 1932 by their industrious owners who couldn't afford a car and a truck.
A ute is ute and a pickup is what Americans call a ute and small truck. Strictly any trayed vehicle based on a passenger car is a ute though, as we all know, anything with a tray that is not a true truck is called a ute.
The Farmer's wife story appears from all accounts to be true but her request was based on seeing converted passenger cars owned by others according to Lewis Brandt himself.

Edit: Just looked at the photo of the 1927 Hudson Essex Pickup. It is clearly the passenger car fitted with a tray. Under the definition of "Ute" this was a ute produced seven years prior to the Ford Ute. There must be others.
It will come down to interpretation of what a ute is.
Ford Australia invented or coined the term Ute, no doubting that.

'ute" or "utility" ? There was actually a brand of American cars produced between 1910 and 1918 called the Utility so every model that company made was a utility. The Victor W Page Motor Corporation of Connecticut also had a model called the utility in 1921 and 1922.

Next time you go to your local video store, rent a documentary called 'ford australia 75 years' and it will clearly state that a farmers wife wrote to ford australia asking for a car that 'was good enough to go to church on sunday, and able to take the pigs to market on monday'.
