BA Speed limiter

A mate of mine who ownes a NA BA Xr6 5 speed and he took it out yesterday to his private airstrip :s6: for a bit of a run. He was surprised at the way the speed limiter comes on, the car gets to 200km/h and simply stops accelerating, none of the surging on and off we have had in the Fords since they have been fitting speed limiters, it even says in the manual that surging may be felt at the limiter although I think they carried this over from the AU book and didnt tell the printers that the surging had now gone.

The Car feels as solid as a rock (he tells me) although its about 20km/h slower than a VX S pack he used to own.

And no tailshaft wobble of any kind, a first for a ford at high speed.

Re: BA Speed limiter

I have had my XR8 ute to around 225 kmh and it is still pulling. i guess the sixes are limited lower, maybe due to the weaker box.

Well you were 5km/h short of the speed limiter because i am pretty sure it cuts in at 230km/h on the XR8 utes.

(Yet to test it for myself)

Re: BA Speed limiter

6 pot N/A's are limited to 200kph, Í can't see it being a weak driveline problem as it should now be stronger than the AU XR6's with the 2 piece driveshaft.

Maybe the speed limiter is not detectable as it could now operate on the FBW throttle now rather than cutting spark?

It must be something like that as they just get there and simply will not go an faster, feels rather strange actually as it almost like someone hooked a caravan on the back and thats simply as fast as she will go.

On another note, a small complaint about the Manual BA is the location of the steering column in comparison to the clutch, I have a size 11 foot and the top of my shoe touches the shaft so that when I am steering with my foot hard on the clutch (pulling into the driveway etc) my foot gets twisted on the clutch pedal. Anyone else noticed this?

Re: BA Speed limiter

Havn't noticed the clutch problem but i'm a size 9ish. What I have noticed is the clutch pedal height causes my upper leg to hit the bottom of the steering wheel when changing gear, forcing me to twist my leg out - im hoping height can be adjusted.

Re: BA Speed limiter

BOF, from memory a while back a bloke from Ford was saying that in testing, test drivers noted that if the car accelerated flat out till it reached the speed limit, it would bounce of the limiter. Then in comparison, if the car accelerated to about 10km/hr of within the limiter, then applied less throttle up to the limit, the limiter would not bounce, rather hold it's maximum speed. Did your mate do this in his?

My mate just put it into 5th at about 140kmh and just held it there till it stopped at 200kmh without the slightest sign of a limiter, as all will know a falcon is still pulling strong at 180kmh when the old limiters used to kick in and you couldnt miss those ones as engine simply turned off for 2-4 seconds then got right back into it again.

And whats this about the engine not being able to rev over 4k with the clutch held in or something? I read it on here a while ago.

Sounds like a pub story to me as its simply not true.
