BA Towbar Ratings

Why is it that the very same towbar on the BA is rated at 1600kg for the auto and 1200kg for the manual?

Or are the towbars slightly different?

Is it a difference in the way it is mounted, a difference in transient loads due to being able to 'drop the clutch' in a manual, or is there a difference in load-bearing ability in the transmission?

Also, does anyone know what the maximum downward load rating on the towbar itself is - as opposed to the total weight over the trailer axles as the 1200/1600kg value appears to be?

Will loading up a Manual Towbar to the weight specified on the Auto do any damage, or is it an issue with warranty and/or insurance.

Clutch durability and heat loading on the transmission. In an auto as the throttle position increases the trans can unlock and shift down. In a manual it's stuck in the one gear (with an abusive driver) and so the engine and box can be loaded up excessively.

But the big one is clutch durability at high loads. The towbars themselves are identical.

So what you're actually saying Pete is that the rating is for the lowest common denominator? For poeple who drive manuals but don't actually know how to drive manuals. Well I drive manual but Ive never towed anything in my life.

Re: BA Towbar Ratings

Autos also have the advantage of external oil cooling. Plus the auto fluid has a better thermal stability compared to gearoil, synthetic included. Which is why I prefer autos for towing, although my manual 121 had a towbar fitted which was rated at 700kg.

Nothing on this earth beats holding your newborn child for the first time.
