I think I read of this problem once before, but can anyone help...?

When driving the car on the open road, after about half an hour or so I get this fairly high pitched whirring ratchety noise which seems to change in intensity depending on how much throttle I use (only in 5th gear so far). Sounds like it comes from the front of the engine. There is a similar (I think, the same) noise but not as loud, that can be heard at idle with the hood up.

I had the dealer look at it under warranty and they cleaned the drive belt. Did nothing. Does anyone know what it is?

Sounds like not many people know what I'm talking about?
It really sound like its coming from one of the wheels that the fan belt runs on. Couldn't be that simple...

The reason I asked for build date is a small number of vehicles built in april 04 had a idler pulley where the suface was heat affected & caused a whirring sound. It's possible that may be the case with your vehicle. Without hearing the sound it's hard to know.

I have a squealing noise coming from the pully belt somewhere. My car is a 12/03 xr6 na. I havnt been to the dealer yet. I have to get the car off my wife.

Great, thanks for that... i'm just trying to compile a few ideas before I take it back to the dealer.

So this sound would also be audible when driving too? Not just when idling? Reason I ask is because as I said above, it only happens loudly when being out on the open road... but can be heard at idle sometimes.

Depends on the condition of the pulley but I think you would hear it while driving also.

I wnet ot my local dealer today. There are to TSB's about pully belts. One relates to newish vehicles and relates to dust on the belt that makes it squeal.
the other is my problem , which is the tensioner pully wheel wears "out of square". The wheel isnt flat as you look across it so the belt pulls at a bit of an angle causing the squeal.
