Question Buying an EF/ EL Falcon

I am new here - sorry if this has been raised before.....

I am looking at buying an EF or EL Falcon.

I went to a dealer who had a dark blue (Galaxy) GLi EL 1998 model with 120,000 kms on the clock. Had Dual airbags and ABS as options.

He wanted $13,000

I am 19 and am working my arse off for a car like this and i was wondering what I could get for around 10 grand. Also what I should be paying and if there are any problems with these cars.

My ultimate would be a V8 Fairmont!

Sounds like a fair price for a dealer car, did it come with any warranty (other than the usual three months)?

A 1998 model with 120thou on it is good kilometre wise, my 95 EF has more than that on it.... dual airbags is always good....as is ABS.

Try looking on the trading post online, get a general idea of prices. You should be able to pick up an EF now for about ten...

The only real problem i have had with my EF was soft brake rotors (excessive wear), the EF's had a history of it, not sure if it followed onto the EL's or not... i replaced them with DBA discs and havent looked back.

They are good cars and i hope you find a good reliable one! It shouldn't be hard! Good luck and enjoy it :o)

Thanks for the tip - I have heard something about the brakes actually. After test driving the car I have to say the brakes are damn good.

I just love the interior and looks of the whole package.

The cheapest i have seen is 7k but well over 200,000kms.....

I am in SA so if anyone has one for sale and the right price dont hesitate to post details.

EL's rock mate and the 98 model is the update so there the best of the best before the AU. I used to have one and there worth their weight in gold if you ask me and 120,000 is good KMS for that car and that price.
If everything works ok your laughing!
As for spending $10k instead I'd get an EF instead for about 7,000 and spend the rest on lowering it and some other things.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah i know they rule - drove one the other day - MY GOD!

The steering, the brakes, the handling, the interior!! BEAUTIFUL!

I am worried that an EF with 150+ kms on the clock may be a little dodgy tho.......

All depends how you want to go and how much money you can afford.
If you can afford it go the EL they really are magic IMHO but If you don't want credit or can't strech the budget your better off spending a little less on the initial purchase and putting some of your hard earned cash away for when something goes wrong.
Less us know what you end up with.
I was in the same position (except I had way less money) and I could have got an excellent EA series II with all my money or an EB with a blown head gasket for $2500 I went with the EB cause in the long run I'll have a better car.
Turned out the EB was a better deal than I hoped. It's got a new clutch, new steering rack, new breaks and front suspention so it turns out the guy spent all this money on it and the head gasket was the last straw. Laughing!
