I have a Patrol 4WD that I'm thinking I might sell. I don't get it offroad much any more so I figure what's the point. I'll be looking at a wagon and my choices will be between Camry and Commodore, or maybe a BA Falcon.
I've never liked Fords much but the BA was the 1st Falcon that I saw and thought it actually looked good. I had a BA hire car which I got to thrash between Melb and Warnambool and back again on the Great Ocean Road and I was very impressed. Last year I had a VY Commuterdore hire car that I drove to Cairns and back from Brisbane, so I have plenty of k's for comparison. The BA is definitely a better car, I liked the Steptronic(?) transmission, headlights were awesome for a stock car. I prefer the Commodore interior but that's not a big factor. BA engine was lovely.
A Camry will be cheaper to run for a little less performance.
So here's your challenge. Convince me to buy a BA Falcon. Not only have my wife and I (and my brother and father) been lifetime Holden fans, my brother in law, and his family are lifetime Ford fans, so I have to factor in the shit I'll cop from everyone if I bought a Ford.
Note: this is a serious post, I'm not a Holden fan just trolling your forum :)
Get the car that best suits you and your family.
You've obviously already driven the BA and VY/X, so say take a Camry for a drive and then decide which car is most comfortable, safest, spacious, has the most features and looks best in your eyes.
Perhaps you should give the Suburu Liberty ago as well.
Just my 5c

I've been driving a VP SS for the past 3 years and have recently purchased an AU3.
Pick the car up today and can't wait. I've also been driving an AU Fairmont for the company for the past 18 months and love it.

I have always owned holdens until I bought my new AU3 XR8. The holden SS was no match at the time, with its outdated auto and "no low down torque" LS1 to name a couple of things. If they kept the holden v8 engine I might have stayed. It took me quite a while to get used to seeing a ford in the garage. My friends gave me shit about it for a week. I love this car and it would now take an awful lot to get me to change back. So far holden do not have much to offer. IMO.
I was a one eyed Holden fan and my dream car was an SS ute but in the end the Ford won and I bought a BA XR8 ute. This is not to say I now hate Holdens, just that I was one eyed but now I have two.
One thing to consider in your comparisons would be resale value when it comes time to part with it. Holdens generally hold their value better than Fords.. I don't know why as most of the Holden V6's I've driven rattled something horrid after 80,000kms but the Ford 6's go forever.
Also, I'm not sure what the go is with the Camry but if you're a tall (or maybe wide) fella then I suggest you pass on a Liberty.. I'm 190 something cms (6'3") and when I switched from the 96 wagon to the ute I realised just how small the Liberty really was.
I say that in this day of shyte traffic (esp. Sydney) you should be in the car you like and it should make you feel good when you're in it.. We're often in them for a long time each day and you need to feel happy about your car to counter balance the negative thoughts and feelings towards your state premier and roads/transport ministers.

OK, well I'm not likely to get a V8, as much as I'd like too. The wife used to have a VS V8 ute that she took to the drags regularly.
I've been wondering about the new BA 6cyl engines - have there been any known issues? It's a pretty high tech engine, and the 1st like it made in Australia (correct me if I'm wrong) so I thought there's bound to have been some teething issues, even if only minor ones.
Thanks for all the replies, good to hear from ex-Holden drivers too.
ok, heres my attempt. I am not going to convince you, I'm going to give you an example.
My wife was a born adn bred Holden fan (like her father). She was not interested in Fords at all.

My wife is a true blue blooded Ford fan, se will not even consider buying a Holden. Why? Well, I bought her a Ford and she loved it.
Simple as that. You already know that the Ford is the better car, you said it yourself. I'm not hear to convince you, just to tell you that you should listen to what your head is already telling you. The fact that you are a Holden fan and even considering a Ford just shows how much better the BA must be.
