considering upgrade, A few Falcon questions...

I currently own an 88 Falcon S MPFI, 3-spd auto. I hate the sluggishness of the auto box, its horrid, and it wouldnt be worth getting the conversion done, the car only cost me 3500 bucks.
I have really taken a fancy to WHAT I THINK is the EL.
As I only arrived in Australia last July, I don't know too much about the Falcon range of models.
I don't know if the car is an EL, or EF, they both look similar. What years were these cars introduced?
What sort of price can I expect to pay for a half decent one? Doesn't have to be mint, just good general condition.
Oh, and what models are available in the range? And what are the differences between the models?
If someone could give me this information, or as much as they are able, I would very much appreciate it!
Thanks!!

David

I am not an E series expert but here goes from my (rusty) memory.

The EF Falcon was released in Sept 1994 and continued through to October 1995 when the EF Series 2 was released. Along the way the XR wagon was dropped (Sept 95) and the LPG Fairmont option as well in the same month.

October 1995 also saw the release of the EF2 "Classic" model - an extra value pack that is well worth picking up if you can find one. 4200 were built in toal - 1900 Gli sedans, 1400 Futura sedans, 600 Gli wagons and 300 Futura wagons.

November 1995 saw the XR powertrain introduced to the Fairmont Ghia and these are another excellent buy.

May through August 1996 saw the build of 4000 Olympic Classics - another value add pack.

October 1996 saw the release of the EL range followed in Feb through May 1997 by another "Classic" pack (4000 again).

August 1997 saw another pack called "Sapphire" of which there were another 5000 built.

October 1997 saw the introduction of the 185 kw V8 option.

Finally Dec 1997 introduced the EL "S" pack - only 1500 units were built so these are as rare as.

Fairly consistent throughout this time the model line-up (specials aside) was as follows:

Falcon GLi
Futura
XR6
XR8
Fairmont
Fairmont Ghia

Hope this helps - and I am sure one of the other E-xperts can help you a bit more.

Cheers

I was at fowles auctions on last wednesday, i saw an GLi Ef go for $5500, and a EL Gli go for $7200 from memory.

These prices are about average, maybe a little less on the EL, This one was in Q U A L I T Y condition.

Just a note on the side, i saw a EB II wif a Tickford Engine in it, didnt say which one, 5 spd manual, anda few other goodies go for $3500!!!

I would have put my hand up if it wernt a wagon.

lata Chris

Oi! There is nothing at all wrong with a wagon. In fact u get a bigger rush when u beat all the rice that try and overtake you :)
Coz its just a family wagon eh?

My belief is that the biggest difference between the EL and EF is that the EL has un upgraded suspension package.

Here's the article - <a href="http://drive.fairfax.com.au/cgi-bin/drive2002/wrapper.cgi?article=..%2Fdocs%2Fcontent-new%2Freviews%2Fused%2F2000%2F03%2F24%2Freview2.html&make=FORD&family=&desc=&IsDealer=&search_query= &result_query=&site_section=news_reviews&cat=reviews&subCat=used&pType=searchresults&querytext="> CLICK ME </a>
