diff clunk

Nearly time for my first, 3000km, service for my XR6. And surprise surprise, the diff clunks (quite badly at low speeds/in low gears) and has a bit of a vibration (off throttle or part-throttle at 90-110kmh).

Will they fix it? Or is it the usual 'it's within tolerance' story?

If they won't, what is the precise nature of the problem and what needs to be done? I'm quite happy to take it elsewhere (I'm in Adelaide, so if any locals have any suggestions, that'd be great).

And before any bright spark says 'learn to live with it', IMO a $40k car in this day and age shouldn't have a rough driveline.... moreso because it's quickly approaching my old EF (with 230,000km) for amount of driveline shunt....

They should fix it, and it's not usual, what year is your xr6? you said it was nearly time for it's first service, do you still have warranty?

They will say it is within tolerance. The clunk is caused by excessive crown wheel to pinion backlash. It is NOT a characteristic of IRS as some dealers have apparently been saying. A 300,000km IRS will have more clunk than an equivalent dray axle, but not in a new car.

If you're not driving a manual you're really just steering.

Does anyone know what the diff rebuild companies charge to rebuild a BA diff with no crown wheel to pinion backlash?

Cheers

johnny r,

My XR6 is a 2003 build BA, with only 2300km on it.

This was a problem with AU IRS as well. My AU suffers the same symtoms. Would be good to hear from someone who has fixed it either through Ford or aftermaket and what was and where was done.
