Could anyone tell me how to change the lights behind the temperature / fuel / climate control display in the centre console of an AUII Fairmont Ghia or is this a dealer only fix type item.
Alternatively could someone direct me to any site that shows me how this is done.

I have had this problem once before and there are lights behind the LCD displays that light up when the lights are on, backlights. One of the bulbs has blown and I can't see how to get to the bulb or change it.
ahhhhh ok, yeah i get what you mean now. its never happened in ours, but youre right - there's no real obvious way of getting into there to change it without taking most of the dash apart.
checked the manual? (i'm too lazy to go and get it to have a look).
On a largely unrelated note, a couple of the LCD thingyies appear to be busted on ours (it cant display the outdoor temperature quite right). Am I ain the same boat and cant fix it with out ripping the whole thing out?
if you mean that the digits arent displaying properly, the only fix is to get a completely new unit = warranty job, or very expensive exercise if it's out of warranty.

Different problem, if you are still under warranty it is a known issue and will be replaced no questions. Mine stoped displaying parts of characters and was replaced under warranty.
However, if you are out of warranty they will never have heard of it before, they will have to order in the parts etc. etc.
Off Topic:
We got our car back from it's 70,000 Km service. The horrid fuel consumption (250Km per tank MAX around town) has been fixed it seems. Around town 400Km looks possible now, yay!
Anyway, had the car back for 2 days now, and the button on the hand brake is fecked (it's fallen into the stick a little bit). It's been fine for 4 years and NOW breaks?

I hate Holden and their warranty. 3 days out of my 3 year warranty with only 40,000 on the clock Isnapped the bolt that goes from the head of the clutch pedal to the master cylinder on my VT Commodore. Aparantly I am the first person in Australia to do this. Phoned holden dealer and they said "gee thats bad luck, by the way your roadside assist also has expired, you will have to make your own way here". Holden only agreed to pay for the parts (gee thanks heaps) I had to pay for the labour. The labour was 3 times more than the Retail cost of the parts.
To cut a long story short traded it on a Ford and now drive a GT-P customer service or lack thereof cost Holden all of my business forever.
