Do people over value their cars ?

Hi there,
Been looking for an xw/y in the last couple of months. Most examples ive seen have been rusted out bogged pieces of crap which the owners have been asking $6500 upwards. Machanically they are crap as well. Some were that bad they had holes right through their boots. Do you think people are overvaluing them because of there classic status ? The ones i have seen have all been falcon 500's with 351's in them. What value would anybody here put on a falcon 500 xy with a 351 in good to excellent condition?

Re: Do people over value their cars ?

Well people do tend to put unrealistic price's on a plain XW/Y because of their status, but dont put the original's in the same basket as the dud's,what I am trying to say is if you come across an totally original XW/Y Falcon even a 500 with 351,4spd and 9inch expect to pay big dollar's,these day's it's so hard to put a $$$ figure on a car like that, without looking at it and taking into acount how original it really is, most of these car's have been converted into GT replica's, or have a non original motor, etc.which is a shame, but if you come across a good one dont hold back,or you will never see it again, cheer's.

Well said. There are a lot of factors which change the value. hard to put a price on something without seeing it.

Re: Do people over value their cars ?

I think the latest Performance Ford Magazine has a write up on pricing for XW/XY's and what to look for even StreetMachine a while ago did the same thing.

If it helps i bought my XW for $5000 in 96 in excellent original condition(Fairmont 6cyl). I reckon you'd expect to pay up to 10k for a V8.

Re: Do people over value their cars ?

got 11k to spend. The problem is just finding one. Ive got the performance ford mag and for the values they suggested i should get a very good example (if i can find one). From what they were describing the cars i looked at would be valued at around $2000.

Re: Do people over value their cars ?

I paid $4,700 for my lady. 351, 4 speed top loader - no 9". I paid $1,800 for a XB GS with 351 (better nick than mine) and a 9" in it. Swapped the 9" to a friend who wanted a 9" to cut up and put in a Cortina who had a XW 9" diff ready to cut up. Stripped the lady and am currently repainting her Yellow Glow. cost to repaint $5000. Total cost - less than $12,000 in imaculate condition and she is a replica.

Keep looking, you will find one.
