A 60 grade oil is for older engines I believe. But I have been wrong before.

I have heard of some people running a mineral base oil for 5000km or so to help calm their oil consumption problem and had success.

Well from all the info that i can gather there are 3 reasons why i'm changeing the oil in the car,
1. A 15w60 will give better start up and high temp protection (hard driveing)
2. A 15w oil will still be a liquid at -20c, and give a HT/HS (high temp/high sheer viscosity) of 3.7 @ 150c.
3. A 0w40 oil will give you -35c start up and a N/A - HT/HS @ 150c.
I don't think that it EVER gets that cold here in Melbourne to use a oil that can run at -35c and cannot give a HT/HS result.

Ok people, here is a weird question.
Do you check the oil when the engine is hot, or cold ?
I know its a stupid question but i had to ask it.
Thanx.

I've always checked oil when it's cold, or been sitting for a while. This allows the oil to drain back to the sump so the level on the dipstick is normalised.

Re: Does your Boss 260/290 use more than 500ml oil per 1000kms?

I have a BA XR8 with 35 000 klms on the clock. The car has never used a single drop.I didn't spare it when it was new and I think this has helped.Didn't continually thrash it but gave it a decent rev here and there.
I use Helix Plus oil as it's 15 w on the low end and overhead cam engines appreciate this on startup.I also have changed oil and filter every 7500klms from new.15000 klms is just too long imo.
The car has never missed a beat.

I did already reply on this topic but just a little update...my XR8 has now got 2400 clicks up and still has not used a drop and has not missed a beat....geez I love her! ...it's just so good leaving every wanker for dead at the lights and havin' a clear road to yourself up front!!

sorry paul unless we are talking an old xf with 15w/40 in her i disagree. The modern oil being very thin it has expansion between cold and operating temp just like trans fluid. If you get it to operating temp then let her sit for 5mins you will get the correct reading
