Re: Does your Boss 260/290 use more than 500ml oil per 1000kms?
My XR8 Boss 260 has just clocked up 8000k and not used any oil what so ever, oil and filter were changed at 3400k.
This car has been driven 90% of the time on open highway and during the first 1500 k's if it was being driven at less than 3000 rpm I would change it down a gear to bring the revs up. Increases the fuel consumption no end but beds the rings in better.
Its not how hard you drive the engine when its running in its how much revs and load on the engine. Don't lug it, don't thrash it, don't sit idling for long periods of time, drive it as hard as you intend using it plus a little bit more. And thats from day one.
If it's intended to drive normally at 2000rpm for 100kmh then drive it in a gear that gives 3000rpm for 100kmh whilst running it in.
The engine builder I used to use would bench run racing engines at 1500rpm for ten minutes to let the temps settle in then increase it by 1500rpm every 10 minutes with the last ten minutes at 500 to 1000rpm above the limit the engine was intended for, NEVER had a problem with any engine using excessive oil in the life of the engine. Last one I bought from him now has 800000k's on it and only leaks oil out of the rear main seal and arround the valve stem seals. Compression test has been the same since 100000k and is about 10psi below what it was when first built.
Just my 2c worth any way.
