Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone here may be able to render me a little assistance with my EF Fairmont. To give a bit of background information it's duel fuel, however prior to my ownership of the vehicle it hadn't been run on ULP for many, many years. As one can imagine the fuel had turned to tar in the tank and the pump and sender needed replacing.

I had all the work done by the local mechanic here along with a standard service. Since the service the engine developed a tapping sound from under the rocker cover. Another trip to the mechanic and 12 new valve lash adjusters later (amongst also replacing the fuel sender again) the car was running fine for the first 10 minutes or so. Once the car heated up however I noticed the tapping sound had returned.

After running the car for a little longer I then noticed an electrical whirring noise, upon arrival home I pin pointed the noise to be coming from the fuel tank. Doing a little more troubleshooting of the issue I found that if I turned the car off and started it again the noise from the fuel pump would cease, however after about a minute of running the noise returns and grows steadily louder.

I phoned my mechanic (who I do trust), however he can't look at it until Wednesday. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for me, but I am moving interstated next weekend and need to do alot of running around. I don't have another car to use so I was hoping that someone may be able to help me diagnose the issue and perhaps put a bandaid on the problem until my mechanic can look at it.

Does the whirring stop if the fuel cap is removed? If so, you might have a partially blocked cap vent (get a new cap); otherwise its probably just a cheap aftermarket pump (stay away from the cheap Chinese ones and get a Goss, Walbro or Bosch). Also heck the pump's ground wire is properly connected and grounded; a bad ground will often cause the pump to whirr.

Are you sure the tapping is from the valves and not the CANP valve (canister purge valve)? If this valve touches the bodywork you can hear it as it opens and closes and the sound travels so often it sound like engine noise - it's designed to be suspended in mid air by its connecting hoses ( it's in front of the LH front wheel behind the bumper accessed by removing the plastic liner inside the wheel well) . Temporarily disconnect the two wire harness from the valve and see if the tapping goes away. The valve is silver about AA battery sized but slightly shorter and fatter.

I assume the mechanic put a new gasket in with pump; if not not only will your hear it whirr but fuel will start leaking into the boot.

Did the mechanic replace the fuel filter (LH side chassis rail under passenger's footwell)? He should have given the history and if not it will be blocked with that fuel tar and overworking the pump.
