hi i have a 89 gls xf ute 4.1 litre webber carby.
just as its been getting colder my engine is making a distinct noise when i start up as the engine warms up the noise gets less. i believe its the tappets.
now my mate says its my engine oil is too thick and that why its making the noise he says that the hydrolic lifters are sticking, i'm currently using penrite HPR 50 which has a viscosity of 40 - 70, could anyone please help with this problem.

for starter the oil u are using is way to thick you sould be using 20w-50 grade your oil pick up wont suck it up what u should do is drain the old oil put 1 liter of kero and top up the engine with cheap shit oil start the car let it run for 15 min drain it and put new oil 20-50 oil if the lifters are still noisy buy lifter free from any spare parts shop LETme know how you go
