I posted this question back in the day before we merged with ford forums, but since the club has expanded so much since then, I was just wondering who has had there systems SPL tested? What did you get and what were you running? Kinda wanna see what kind of numbers people get out of sedans!
Only tested once: 139.7db with one 15" RF sub. Has the potential to crack 141db with the right techniques though.
i got 131.7dB with my car - 2 12" soundstream rubicon 12s in a sealed 1.5 cu ft box at a test and tune. it is set up for SQ.
only did one run, and tried about 15-20 tones before finding the highest spl, by then the battery was F*cked and the revs were dropping like 500rpm each time i played a sine wave, even though i was free-revving it to 2000 in an effort to keep a little charge in the battery...might have another go next time there is one on.

SPL = Sound pressure level. Measured in dB (decibels).
Basically it's a competition to see who has the loudest car hi-fi. They almost always sound like crap, but they can play a single frequency really loud.
A complete waste of time IMO.
Originally posted by Rmyers I think you would change your mind if you sat in Bass crazies, Sphells, or my car! Why do you say that they are a waste of time?
I think you're wrong about changing my mind. I'm not interested in SPL competitions and I think they are silly.
They are are a waste of time because of the way the ruling is structured in the fact one only needs to play a single tone the loudest to win. This has no relationship with setting up a decent sounding audio system. So IMO they are a waste of time, I don't see any achievement.
FYI I've spent countless hours designing and installing many audio systems for cars as that was one of my sidelines. I now currently only deal with home audio.
These days, my own vehicles simply have a CD head unit, a modest amplifier and a set of my own designed Audax split speakers all mounted in the front. This kind of design (if done properly) is unmatched in sound quality and the closest I have become to making it sound like a decent home system (though still not close enough).
Note, all the above is my opinion and I have no problem with the people involved in SPL comps, however you did ask :-).
Well then that would be like saying it's a waste of time to build a dragracer cause the idle quality would be very poor, and you wouldn't be aloud to drive it on the streets. Not everything has to be practical. Consider it a sport, it's just as hard to build a SPL biased sytem than it is an SQ system.
My system is far from being SPL biased. If it was, for the amount of money I've already spent, it could've been at least twice as loud (to the ear!) as it is now, but I've decided to get the best from both worlds.
ANYWAY, I'm reclaiming my thread now, anyone else got an SPL score!
