Falcon engine number

I have bought a boat with an old Ford Falcon engine installed. The problem is I don't know what model it is and, being a boat, there is no model number or chasis number. However I have an engine number, which is AQ170A250.

Ford Australia doesn't keep records of engine numbers (so they say) but hoping someone out there might be able to help me. It is a straight six and I suspect it is from the seventies, maybe from an XA, XB or XC. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

i don't think it is from the years your talking about as the sequence for this period incorporates 12 digits.

example : jg23aa12345c
c= 6 cyclinder

Re: Falcon engine number

Thanks for the advice. I wonder if the number I quoted is even a Ford engine number. I took it off the registration certificate (I will have to check the engine itself on the weekend when I go to the mooring). I suspect the boat originally had a Volvo Penta engine because it has a Volvo stern drive attached. Maybe the number I quoted is from the Volvo.

Re: Falcon engine number

From memory, the rocker cover is about three inches wide with an oil filler plug near the front. I will try to get to the boat this weekend and see if there are any other markings that might be of assistance in identifying it. I may also be able to take a photo.
