The Scorpio is no longer made, and if you look at the last model they made, you can easily tell why (makes and AU falcon look exceptionally good).
Basically there is no European equivelant to a Falcon, and definately not engine wise. Most European cars are small cars (Ford Fiesta, Holden Barina ala Opel Corsa etc. & Ford Focus and Holden Astra size), but with Petrol twice the price of what we pay here, I guess it's understandable.
Big engined cars (as in 4.0L) are only for the very rich in Benzes and Merc's, and are pretty rare. Diesel is also popular, for it's fuel economy.
Looking at at the UK ford website, Mondeo, is now the biggest sedan Ford sell, which would be considered a Mid-size car in Australia, say Camry, Mazda 6 size.
I reckon the closest your going to get over here to a falcon from the ford family would probably be either an S type or an XJ series Jag,after all they are owned by ford, you can get them with either a 6 a v8, or even a supercharged 400 bhp V8, as has been rightly pointed out the cost of fuel over here is pretty high, so you can pick a pretty decent supercharged V8 for not a lot of cash.

Didi the post ask for a NEW car equavalent to a Falcon or just what would be the equivalent car? They actualy sell Falcon utes in the U.K that run on straight LPG. They dont use the Falcon name or even Ford. I saw one on display in an alternative energy exhibition in the London Science Museum. It had the Ford logo on the moulded trayliner but none other that I could see on it. Dont recall what they called it??? It was an AU type
I always thought that the Ford Sierra was closest to a falcon. When I was over there in 97, the Sierras looked very similar to the EA-EB with 2 litre engines in them.
Seirra's are not all that common, even in the U.K. The dominant Fords over there now are the Focus and Mondeo (which isnt sold here). The Falcon equvalent has always been the Granada, and later the Scorpio, which is similar (read: ugly) to the Taurus.
The seirra is not a late model of the escort. The escort and the Seirra sold side by side and the escort was still being produced well after the seirra stop production. Seirra actually repalced the cortina in the early eighties and then the Mondeo replaced the seirra in the late 80's early 90's.
The seirra had a range of engines which included the 1.6l, 1.8l 2.0l and I think 2.8l v6. Also the RS500 seirra had the cosworth motor along with the seirra saphire which was the sedan version.
Here in the UK the escort sold beside the focus (Which was the escorts replacement) for atleast 2 years so the new radical desing of the focus was tested in the market. Also the escort was cheap to produce.
