Tongue First Calder Run in the XR8

Well, i arrived at the track, got scruitineered, and headed for the track..

I wasn't too impressed at the whole setup/track/RETURN ROAD (Geezuz!), but it was still a pretty good track all up..

I did some runs as soon as i got there, and realised straight away that traction was going to be an issue. I ran some 16.3's after wheelspinning my way to the 60 foot line I couldn't even get rid of the 2 mag wheels in the boot because there was nowhere to put them! (read: extra weight)

Luckily, i found laminge, and chucked them in the back of his tow car..

I could only get some 205/60/15 bridgestones in time for friday, so that's where my problems lay.. I would have loved to use the 225/50's i got, but i burned them out! (being silly last week)

Anyway, after about 5 runs, i still couldn't get my launches right.. then i got a launch perfect, and messed up the 1st-2nd gear change (CRUNCH) (Not my fault) So that run was a 15.9

Then, near the end of the runs, i had offloaded the mag wheels into minges car, did a ripper stage burnout, before heading upto the line. Pretty good launch, slight wheelspin off the line, and pretty good gearchanges..

Went to collect my slip, and it was a 15.57 @ 91.53mph. I was happy with that, considering the conditions.. This run, i basically had to ease 2nd gear in otherwise it would crunch and kill the gear.. It would be so much easier if i could just flat change.. The synchro will get done soon..

I reckon, with some good grippy tyres, lower profile tyres (for higher ratio), the trap speed says i should be pulling mid-high 14's.. So, we'll see how we go next time..

It will be interesting to see what other people run tomorrow at heathcote..

Let us know!

Only people i saw from the forums at the track racing were TuffED and Laminge..

Comments appreciated guys..

Cheers,
Yagz

Good on ya for having a go Yagz It will be interesting to see if you can crack 14s with good tyres and having the synchros fixed. When I get holidays I'll be heading out to Calder for sure.

Thanks Ash and Dan..

I'm sure there's a 14 in this puppy somewhere.. I'll tell you what though, it's a whole diffrent kettle of fish dragging in a manual.. The auto, is so consistent, because you just have to stall and plant the foot But the manual... It sure tests your stamina Especially after 9 runs

Re: First Calder Run in the XR8

good to see you didn't give up at 16's. Surely with your issues sorted you'll be cracking a 14 in no time.
Good Luck.

Re: First Calder Run in the XR8

I can tell where i am losing my time..

My 60' times were all around 2.3, 2.4, and the 1st to second gear change lost a good 2 - 3 tenths. There's definitely some time to be made up.

Re: First Calder Run in the XR8

15.59 is an OK time considering the tyres you were using mate. Go buy some second hand 225x50x16's from a tyre joint and go from there. The best i could pull was a 15.6 and im pretty sure the mph wasnt in the 90's. Give it to me one Friday night and ill get you that 14
