Hi Guys,
I was wondering if someone could help me out with my question? I currently own a Series II EA Falcon and am looking to buy myself a newer car, preferably a 5 speed EL XR6. I'm not too sure how to tell if a car has been "thrashed" or not. I personally know of a guy who thrashed the hell out of his EL XR and I don't want to get fooled into buying one like his. I knew very little about cars when I was given my current car 13 months ago and it appears to have suffered a hard life. I really can't afford to sped $15,000+ on a car only to have to spend a lot more on repais like I've done with my EA.
Thanking you in advance,
Its really just the obvious thing...make sure its been serviced regularly, and that its not making any weird noises (clunks, whine etc) get a compresion test done, ensure it runs smooth - take it on a long drive and listen to the noises it makes...check to see clean coolant (gives a good indication cooling system has been looked after, which means less chance of head gasket going) if your still not too sure about it have it NRMA, or RACQ ir whatever inspected ...
Check oil colour also.
And get a test drive from a dead cold start - this will give a good indication of rattly lifters, clunky diff and gearboxes, which may not be picked up when warm.

IMO if the car has been well looked after it shouldn't matter whether someone has given it a bit. So just check for the normal stuff to see whether it has been looked after or not.
