I am looking to get a new car soon and just wanted to get some feedback from those who have seriously driven both the GT and the XR8.
With the XR8 now selling with 18 inch wheels and harder suspension setup, it is hard to justify the extra $10k for the GT.
I know a lot of people would be looking at the turbo (either the standard or the Typhoon) but I like the V8.
Feedback would be much appreciated.
10k for the prestige and it being an it being an FPV, also more performance, better looks ,wow factor and all the extras.
I find it hard shelling out more than $50k for a car so I got the turbo. if money was no issue and had nothing better to spend it on, then i would get the GT.I am a cash man ,unless I pay cash I don`t buy it. The Xr8 sounds awesome, insurance will be dearer with the GT,so that is something to consider.
Best of luck

I guess it depends on whether you attach some sort of prestige to a car. Personally, I think an extra $10k would be worth it. Had I spent upwards of $50k for an XR8, I know I'd be kicking myself if I didn't shell out a little more to park my arse in a GT.
XR8 basic (cloth seats, non climate control, standard brakes, non mag spare wheel povvo stereo) $ 51275
XR8 upgraded to "neo GT" (5 x 18" rims, climate control, prem brakes, colour stereo, arbags, alarm etc) $ 61469
XR8 as above but auto $300 dearer.
Basic GT $61k
And they do go sooooooo much better.

Let him that hath understanding count the number of the BEAST:
for it is the number of a F6 Typhoon; and its number is 0217.
I was hoping to get some feedback on the driving characteristics. For example:
Is the GT that much more oversteery?
Is the GT limited slip diff any different?
Is the GT easier to get sideways?
Is the GT much louder?
Is the GT much harder in ride quality?
Is the GT much worst in fuel consumption?
Does the GT pull and handle so much better that the above don't matter?

It really depends on what your preferences are. At the time of buying my XR8, the Gt's weren't available in the first place. And personally, I don't like the GT spoiler.
I'm poor and bought the XR8, and I don't regret it one bit.

I own a Mk1 GT-P but it has the same suspension and engine and a GT.
I have driven several Mk1 XR8s, mostly manuals and all with 17" wheels.
GT-P has a lot more go, particually above 3000rpm
It will outbrake a standard XR8 severly (I have never driven a XR8 with prem brakes)
The suspension is a bit harder and it handles significatly better.
It is a little bit louder and a LOT sweeter.
It is FAR more stable at high speed 180km/h ++ (I have only been 200km/h in a XR8, 250 in the GT-P)
Diff is the same but the Mk1 GT is 3.46 and the XR8 is 3.23 (Mk2 is 3.46)
Turn off the traction control and act like a ricer and you will be in a world of hurt. The GT is not a toy for new players. Throw it sideways without the skill to control it and when it bites the torque will throw you off the road. (just ask the dickhead who pranged the red one on the MOTOR drive day)
Try one of each, make your own decission. There are plenty of demos at dealers all over the country.

MKII gets 18's standard, i think the side airbags are standard now to but not sure. If i had gotten the lux interiour package my xr8 would have cost me $54,4oo ish. It's worth it now that i think about it, wish i had gotten it.

My Lady and I are a little conservative so we went the XR8 over the much less conservative GT, but also for us the large rear spoiler put us off.
We absolutely love our XR8 to death, gee she's beautiful, and with mods planned and happening she'll be over the 300Kw's soon so nothing lost to the GT power wise.
MKII xr8 gets the same springs as a MKI GT which is the only suspension difference between the two. A MKII xr8 with premium brakes and lux int package + change spent on bolt ons and a full exhaust would eat a GT. But its still not a GT, what do you want from the car at the end of the day. How much are you prepared to spend on the car and mods.
