Multipoint is done

Hello all :hit:

As some of you would know last Sunday (4th) Sundeep, my brother (dpk83) and I began a CFI -> MPI conversion on my car. We figured it would be pretty straight forward, given that it wasn't long ago that his car was done, and this is about the one millionth time this has been done on a car in the club.

With 90% of the parts I needed to complete it we set off that morning in search of the rest of the parts (mainly hoses, pipes and various nuts and bolts. We returned to Sunnys house at about lunchtime with everything we needed, so we had lunch while the engine was cooling.

After lunch we set about the fun task of pulling all the CFI parts from the engine. I messaged Doug (SPHELL) to see what he was doing that afternoon, and sure enough he was able to come over and help with getting the MPI parts onto the engine. The only problems we had at this stage of the game, were that there was some concern over the injector wiring loom that we were using. We actually had three different looms and none of them were complete!

With everything ready to be bolted up to the engine, we were on the home straight. An hour later it was all on and about time to give it a try. The engine started cranking but there was no spark at all! (see separate thread in garage) We tried various things that night before calling it quits. Doug gave my brother and I a lift home.

Monday afternoon I returned to Sunnys house ready to give things another try. Sunny was sure that he had worked out the problem with car, while he was waiting for me to come over with the keys. Again, there was no luck in starting the car. We tried more things that night but still no spark. It was at the stage when I started to get frustrated.

Tueday I returned once again in the hope that we would hear the engine running that day. We tried lots of things, but there was still no luck.

Wednesday I gave my mechanic a call in the morning and he suggested I try various things to get it started but none of them worked. I gave him a call back and he gave me the number of an expensive on the spot E.F.I specialist. I called Ray (E.F.I man) and arranged to meet him at Sunnys house on Thursday morning.

Thursday morning 8:15am I arrived at Sunnys house and waited for Ray to show up. He did some tests and nearly got it running, but the car started to backfire through the inlet manifold and out the throttle body. Hrmm... Ray suggested that the dizzy was 180 degrees out and because he had run out of time left that job to Sunny and I.

I came back that afternoon when Sunny had finished school and told him what we needed to do. So Sunny took the dizzy out and put it back in the way Ray had described. There was spark now but the engine still wouldn't start. That night I returned home and called Ray to ask for an explanation. He didn't know what to say, except that he could take a look on Friday morning at about 10:30.

Friday morning 10:30am I arrived at Sunnys house with my mum and waited for Ray. He arrived and took a look at things and said that the engine should have started last night. He took the rocker cover off to check things and put it back on. He tried it and the car started for the first time in five days. He spent a couple of hours going over things to get it running as well as possible.

Friday afternoon, when Ray left I drove the car home only to find that lots of black smoke was coming from the exhaust and the car was running quite rough.

Saturday I was at work and left the car sitting in my garage at home.

Sunday morning I intended to take the car for a short drive around the block to see what it was like. I started it and it was running rough as anything and stil lots of black smoke. Took a look under the bonnet and found that one of the pipes going to the MAP sensor had come off. Plugged it back in and the smoke had disappeared! I was happy.

Sunday evening I drove to Sunnys house to collect tools and get Sunny to have a look at it, as he hadn't seen it since Thursday night. We ended up installing my new throttle cable and thermostat before adjusting the idle speed. When we had done that, the car was running absolutely perfect. No smoke, no rough idle. Took it for a drive and things were great. So we put Sunnys pod filter on and took it for a spin.

With myself driving, Sunny in the passenger seat, my brother in the back and heaps of tools and parts in the boot the car was still pulling noticably harder than when I had the CFI and was driving alone! Returned to Sunnys and put back the standard airbox were off. At last, after a full week the conversion was complete.

In no particular order I would like to thank the following people for making this happen:

Sundeep - dedicated a full week to working on my car, for that I can't thank you enough.
Damian (brother) - for helping us when he could, came to pick-a-part and wreckers on the first Sunday
Doug (SPHELL) - for helping on Sunday night and via SMS through the week, and also for the lift home that Sunday night
Simon (Bass_Crazy) - for selling me most of the parts I needed for the conversion and for the phone support at times
Karl (NZ) - for organising to have Scott Hart do the conversion in the first place and offering lots of support via email and MSN
Sundeeps mum - for not getting angry at having my car sitting in her driveway for a week with parts all over the garage.
And anyone else that replied to Sunnys threads in the garage, I thank you all.

Also your tool set came in handy for the diff swap as i didnt have a 10mm open end ring spanner
No worries Karl, at least you didn't break them. I didn't expect them to last through the MPI conversion...

going to run it at the meet now?
Not too sure yet mate. If I can get hold of a helmet for cheap and have money for a few surprise mods before then, I may have a run or two. :running:

Good work mate and great story of your experience. Sounds like it can be a fiddly job. I am looking to do this on the girfriends car in the not to distant future but I am yet to find a mechanic who will help me :( Let us know how you find it over the next couple of weeks.

One more question , What was the overall parts cost of the change over??

davocol, I think all up part were about $500+ but thats including 2 manifolds, a couple of dizzys, 3 wiring looms and a brand new fuel pump from Ford $198!. He seems pretty happy thats it all sorted now, and when I had a drive today I noticed it pulls a fair bit harder and smoother and also sounds pretty nice compared with the CFI setup.

well done mate!

My car is still cfi but i have a donor mpi manual sitting in my backyard so it wont be long now! Does the donor car being dual fuel make it any harder to use for the converstion if mine does not run on gas ie. modified wiring looms?

Nice post Ash!

Oooooohh, surprise mods ;)

Matador : Yes, the injector wiring loom will be different. Just go find one from a wrecker and swap them over. Make sure you get a '88 GL/S one if your car is a '88 GL/S.

Cheers!

Without the new fuel pump it cost about $300 give or take a few dollars. However, I did it the hard way by not buying all the parts together and my bargaining skills are well below par. The going rate is about $200-$250 for everything you need and I know that NZ paid quite a bit less than $200 for all the parts he needed.

I'd say there aren't many CFI cars left in the club at all.
They are a dying breed that's for sure. Now I've just got to save some money to become part of the Modified MPI I6 Club (tm)

Melb people only:

Im now looking for a CFI car to convert so i can write up this tutorial. The costs would be $100 to $150 (labour) depepnding on the car plus the cost of the mpi parts. I can provide a list of the parts you'd need to get. Non gas cars are prefeered also. The catches are that the conversion will need to be done on a sunday and at this stage youd need to travel to inverleigh to where it would be done. This is where my friend lives whos a qualified ford tech. Id garuntee that you would drive the car home. Pm me or post here or whatever.
Ta!
