New 6-speed auto for BA

Visited the newsagency and they had the new edition of Motor magazine on the stands. Article near the front saying that Ford will be using the ZF 6 speed auto in their upmarket and performance cars from early 2004. This transmission is lighter than the current one, and can handle much greater torque loadings.

There's also mention of insiders at Ford who are pushing for a higher output verion of the XR6 Turbo.

Whilst the XR6 Turbo issue may be heresay, I think the big news is the auto transmission. Imagine having 6 closely-spaced ratios in an auto? No doubt they'll bring this out in the Series II. Now I'm seriously considering saving my pennies and waiting for Series II before getting my XR8.

It's been iin the works for while, but I wonder how it will affect pricing as it will be an expensive gearbox.

I'd be happy to spend a little more for a gearbox that could handle more torque... if I was in the market for a auto. Then again, maybe this is the box that could convert me to the soft-o-matic brigade.

nice avatar Sparkles.. love ya work.

would this be a gearbox similar to the auto on the current ba`s?
meaning would it have sequential shift?

Re: New 6-speed auto for BA

Damnit, everyone has beaten me to the Motormag postings today.

Probably just gave away when BA Mk2 is out "early 2004".

Suplied by ZF, new six speed auto is technically superior lighter... yack yack yack.... sustain a punishing 630NM of torque (that a clue?). "Slot into premium and performance falcons" (does the XT get left behind?). Something about claiming the new auto GT would beat a manual

In the new Jaguar XJ's they still use their "j" gate setup, whereas I don't know if a sequential type shift is available in the Audi range that also uses this gearbox. I would guess that some form of "manual" control would be available. I like the thought of 10% better fuel economy and acceleration if the mag article is correct.

It would seem so. Motor also seems to think the AWD Commodore V8 wagon will sell for $60K and that the Territory will undercut it. With the sales of "high" body AWD's stealing sales from traditional wagons I can now see how Fords thinking with the Territory seems to stack up better. It could be cheaper, provide the elevated driving position that everyone prefers of a Pajero/Prado type vehicle and seating for 7. I think they now do have a winner on their hands.

Sorry, sorry, sorry, don't care how may speeds the auto will have, I will continue to use the manual tranny until arthritus or dementia forces otherwise.
