Re: Oil changes between services...

TIKFD6 - Just a question about putting oil in the new filter, i have never done it, and thinking about it, its probably a good idea!!!

I also change my oil every 5000-7500k's. I use a tool for my oil filter, but i do not to it tight at all, just a little tiny bit more than hand tight, like you know when you want to see if something is tight and you just tighten it up a little, well thats how tight..

Re: Oil changes between services...

yeah that oil filter fill up with oil seems like a great idea, as there is none in there to circulate until it fills up, no oil pressure.

Re: Oil changes between services...

Yep thats the idea.
Just makes the whole thing go alot smoother, and there is no chance of oil starvation.

How important is it to full the filter with oil? I have never done it on any vehicle I have ever owned including the 2 Falcons I have had, and on other utes I have had the filter screws into the side of the block (Navaras for example) where it is impossible to full the filter, if it was important wouldn't they have the filter in a position like the Ford where it screws upward? just a thought thats all.

i can tell you this can be important, my worn out XE wont suck up the oil if i dont fill it first(knocking noises hurt my brain)

i used to do the screwdriver through the side but since i had one that tore open comletely and was still a bastard to get off after i bought a tool. i always use a tool for removal

DON'T EVER over tighten as my mate doing me a favour changing my oil did, AS the oring can distort or tear and it takes seconds to pump new(wasted prescious stuff)oil all over your hopefully clean garage floor
DONT buy kmart etc brandX oil unless you want to run in(read: WEAR OUT!!) your engine

no offence taken
maybe a few tight wads out there thinking oil is oil and not realising its cheaper to buy good oil(i use penrite even in my stuffed ute) than to fix a motor
theres a bloke i work with who is finding this out the hard way

Re: Oil changes between services...

I use the cheapest i can find , only when i am doing an Engine Flush.

To avoid overtightening, i only tighten the filter hand tight.

Re: Oil changes between services...

oil should always be changed every 5000kms(10 000 absolute max) as it wiil get too much fuel contamination, and hence more friction than needed.
i usually take the oil cap off after ive removed the sump plug as it usually helps the oil come out a bit quicker.

i know an excellent engine rebuilder he reckons never use castrol oil mainly their cheap stuff(gtx) incl. magnatec because hes had a rebuilt motor serviced on castrol every 5000kms after bout 200 000 ks (i think), the motor wasnt running the best so out it came and he couldnt beleive how much sludge was in the motor mainly under the rocker cover....
he always uses penrite semi-synthetic stuff- hpr 30 (15w/60) or for new hi-qual cars hpr 15 (5w/40 i think)
if u look at the api rating. eg. api SL/CH the letter after the S is the oil "performance" rating, i think L is the highest. most penzoil, semi synthetic and synthetic stuff has the SL rating. if i had a new hi-po motor i would prob use full synthetic for the best protection. otherwise semi synthetic.

Also the thinner(ie. weight) the oil is the less horsepower that is used to drive the oil pump, only recommended if you have a fairly new motor and rev your engine around 6k as you wont see much difference below that. also wouldnt recomended it for old motors. there isnt a big difference in power but it is easy power that is there if your motor wont mind it.
