pls help: no 4th on auto Au

Hi,,,,i'm having problems with my car, its an I6 auto Au and sometimes when i'm driving i don't have the 4th gear so the car is always in 3rd and i also notice that when i don't have 4th and i come to a complete stop and to start driving again it feels like the car has no power, and i have to rev it abit almost fell like 1st is gone too, but these problems doesn't occur all the time only sometimes. does anyone know whats wrong? but its being occuring more and more lately.

Strange as it may seem, try the car with the air con off, and see if the fault reappears.
I have been told if the air con gas is low, the compressor clutch engages too often, triggering computor to hold out fourth gear to keep the revs up.
I assume you have already checked the fluid level? basics first.

My EL i6 auto lost 4th at one tim. was solenoid that selcted top.
cost about a grand to fix

Pretty sure that when the gearbox goes into "limphome" mode that it selects 3rd. That fits with the sluggishness when you stop and take off again, it is taking off in 3rd as well.

There are many reasons why it could be in limp mode...

yeah i don't think i can check fluid levels theres no dipstick for au's. but i haven't had a fluid change for a while but i've already booked in for service on monday, so fingers crossed that its just low on fluid i hope its not mechanical or anything major..

is your speedo working on some models if the speedo wires are un hooked under the car the thing wont go into forth gear
