A really dumb question

I know some stuff about cars, then I know nothing about other things.. what does for example '5.8L' mean? I know it has to do with engine size, but what specifically?

Thanks.

Re: A really dumb question

I may be answering this "dumb' question with a dumb answer, but here goes. 5.8L relates to engine capacity. In old fashioned speak it would have been referred to as a 5800cc engine...which means, as jemmex said,it's a beast in any language. Would I also be correct in saying that it's a V8?

Re: A really dumb question

It's the capacity of the engine - the swept volume. 4" (101.6mm) bore, 3.5" (76.2mm) stroke and a bit of maths will tell you its ~5760cc.

Re: A really dumb question

basically in laymans term if the piston was at the bottom of every cylinder you could fit 5.8L (really 5760ml) evenly spread- in all the cylinders. thats 5.8L all up so 725ml would fit in each cylinder. i just confused myself lol.sorry hope that clears it up

It's better rounding than Ford's "5.0" 302 V8!!! (Which is actually 4949cc)
