A friend of mine is considering buying a new XR8 but was put off a bit when told that it was speed limited to 180km and was also told the limiter was there because the diffs wont handle anything above that speed.
Has anyone heard or know anything about this.

speed limiter on ba series xr8's is set at 240Ks, 180 on none xr utes & station wagons

180 limit on au xr8 utes because of extra long tail shaft. pursuit 250,ba xr8,turbo all have 2 peice tail shaft 240 limit. 180 limit not even reached at drags so its never botherd me

I don't think it's anything to do with diffs, plenty of boys on here have chipped their drives and change the limiter and I have'nt heard of their diffs not coping.

Speed limiter on my Mark 1 XR8 is 230.

There is no substitute for cubic inches but my pursuit sure closes the gap




*UPDATE * Pursuit has just run 11.763 and 116.18 mph making it Australias Quickest and fastest unopened boss as well as Australias Quickest and fastest naturally aspirated Boss

220 on xt, futura, fairmont
230 on xr's

so the NA xr6 is faster than the standard six!

Actually according to the Manufacturers Handbooks
ALL BAs 200 km/h except
Fairmont Ghias 210 km/h
XR6T & XR8 230 km/h
FPV 250 km/h

This is approximate as at high speed the tyres are bigger due to centrifical force and the length of the tread stretches a teeny bit so in my case the actual max speed by aviation GPS (read expensive and accurate) is 254 km/h

AUs were 180km/h except for some of the early ones and the T series/pursuits which I think were unlimited but am not sure.

In relation to the diffs. I dont think it is the diffs as much as it is the YOLKS on the diff opening up and spitting the tail shaft out. Like said before the actual one piece tail shaft being too long and building up excessive whip.

my au2 xr6 was unlimited had it up to 210kph

Thank everyone for all the info, my friend rang me back today and was told
that the limiter had been raised to 245km( made me happy as currently own AU XR8III ute,newy on the way). My friend went to order one today, Good to see another ex commy driver change sides!
