Well picked up my new XR6 yesterday, and couldn't be happier today - its awesome!! Just one thing - when i drove it home from the dealer, got about 2 mins away and suddenly start to smell something burning! Anyway pull up at the lights and theres a slight mist of smoke coming from under the hood. I babied it home the last 5mins and popped the hood to be met with a cloud of smoke!! NOT HAPPY. Ring the dealer and he reckons that the smell is the coating they paint on the exhaust at the factory and that there will be a strong smell for a couple of days and a litlle bit of smoke. That sounded like it could be true, and today the smell has totally gone and no smoke at all, so i aint worried anymore. Just curious if anyone else experienced the smell (it was quite toxic smelling and gave me one big headache!) and particulary has anyone gotten any smoke coming from the hood?? Just think if your paying so much for a new car, u dont need to pull up at the lights smelling like a train and and looking like uve blown a head gasket! A bit embarresing thats all.

- oh yeah did i forget to mention that the cars AWESOME!!!

didnt the car have any K's on it when you picked her up?

I had similar issues when I worked at Holden, especially with the small cars. It's a yellow substance and has a stench.

Your car had very low kays on it, some cars have upto 50 kays as they are randomly road tested from the factory to ensure quality. Maybe there was some over spray onto the exhast, spilt glue/sealant or did the dealers spray anything over the engine bay to dress it up the way second hand car yards "armour all" everything to hide old hoses etc..

I remember when I brought my brand new EL home from the dealer. I noticed a smell but it wasn't burning. More of a very hot plastic, hot rubber and hot metal smell. Strange as it may sound, I actually liked that smell. It was a proud moment taking my baby home for the first time. :s5

I will bet it was the plastic clips that are on the return lines above the Turbo. They are supposed to be removed at PD but if the leave em em on they melt and they stink like all hell.
