My former TE 50 Series 2 did that too,and although it wasn't fixed at the time someone else also said that it might be the purge valve solenoid.
Cheers John

mate i have the same sound on my car its a series 3 xr8 also...and its not a problem buddy...its some canister that works with the air thats in the fueltank, it acts as some sort of a filter, iv taken my o peter warren at warwick farm and they said that that is a common thing on the xr8's and its no problem, just that some are more louder then others....if that helps??
Yep it's the purge valve solonoid. Very common problem on some AU's. It's not faulty, still works fine (damn I'm starting to sound like a Ford tech) but the tickin' was enough for me to change it on my AU XR8. Quite easy to do. The solonoid comes with all the tubing attached. Do not try to take the tubing off and just replace the solonoid, there's a reason why it comes with tubing attached. Take the stone tray off from under the front bar and you'll see the purge canister and solonoid (under the left headlight). Push up to take the purge canister off, unclip electrical connector, undo the old tubing, unclip the tubing from engine side by pulling back on locking cilps. Unbolt the airbox if you like to make it easier. Installation is a reversal of the above.

Yep, I had the same problem on my AUIII XR8. It's the purge valve. The first time I complained about it the dealer said they fixed it by replacing the valve. It made no difference. At the next service I got the workshop manager to listen to it. He confirmed that it was the purge valve and this time it was fixed
I have more than one ticking coming from mine. The good old purge valve tick is one. Another is coming from the extractors until they heat up. These 2 do not concern me, but the last one is more of a knock on cold start which sounds internal and goes away completely as it warms up, not sure if it's piston slap in the bores? Its going back to the dealer in 2 weeks for all 3 noises. Would be very interested if anyone else has had similar problems. Thanks.
