3 weeks ago a vn commy didnt give way at the lights and i t-boned him in my falcon and wrote it off. When i get my insurance payout im going to start looking for a 351 xa to xc falcon 2 door. Looking a spending $9000 so what should i be looking for in a falcon of this age and what are the main areas that rust appears in these models? Thanks

Re: what to look for

your main concerns regarding rust are simply...everywhere!!!!
For a coupe, stick your head in the boot and look at the bottom of the rear parcel shelf.. it's a nototious place for rust.
Nect comes the sills, then the bottom of the guards, under the dash (you won't see it but it may be there ) There are heaps of places it may be but you won't see unless you take the guards off and such.

A good bodgey job can be hard to track so look for any clues like lack of seams and the like.

As xa-coupe said, check the body in the places listed for dodgey repairs and lack of seams.

Another thing to consider is what you want to do with the car. If you want to start modifying the engine, it may be better to choose an XA or XB over an XC to avoid emissions hassles. That doesn't mean you can't modify a later model engine, t just makes it a little harder to do and keep it all legal.

Happy hunting and don't forget to post pictures!

Re: what to look for

At the moment i don't plan on modifying the engine. Few other questions though. Is a four speed quicker then an auto? What examples should I expect for $9000? What is the difference in the coupe and the hardtop? And what was the fuel enconomy of the 351c? (Not worried about economy, just interested to know.) My better half has a mini so that is our cheap run around.

Re: what to look for

Coupe just means 2 doors..Hardtop means pillarless (No B pillar) So the Xa/b/c's are 2dr Hardtops....you can get 4dr hardtops like chevy impala's.

Re: what to look for

watch for ex-sprinters as some people put really steep gears at the back. 4.11s for example, and with 351, you'll never afford petrol
