After many months of sittin on my ass.. ive decided its time to finally do this damn transmission conversion ive been thinkin about. Just wondering what its gonna cost me to get mechanic to simply swap my auto and manual boxes between my wagons. I will have done the pedal boxes myself so all i need them to do is bolt up the boxes. Im thinking $300 tops? What do u guys think?

Takes us about 3 hours out and 3 hours in.
6 hours per car = 12 hours work @ $50/hour = $600. Then you have to modify the wiring...
DIY mate, much cheaper. As Gli 90 said, check out the thread we made on it.

Id love to be able to do it myself, however how the crap do u get the cars high enuf??? How do i lift the boxes up into position?

Special tools you need (other than sockets etc)
Decent jack (although if you want you can use two scissor jacks and bricks

)
Some sort of crane. Whether you use a come-along or something off the boat, or borrow an engine crane from somebody...as long as it can lift 300 kg you're right.
It might pay to get one out the Quokka ~ $50-$100, maybe split it with some mates who also might use it?

But lets face it, even buying one for a single use then reselling it will cost you less than the mechanic.

Yeh but its a pain in the arse taking the box out with the motor in...particularly changing the flywheel from under the car and then aligning the clutch
And then you have to fix the wiring....which is trapped behind the intake manifold.

Don't get me wrong, he's right and you can do it, it's just a lot of extra swearing and trying to reach things you can't get at.

You dont need a crane or anything.
All ya need to do is unbolt the gearbox. Drop it on the ground, then get two strong people to lift the car up so you can drag the gearbox out. SIMPLE.

2 of my mates lifted my old 302 clevo into and out of my trailer i was like what the hell thats like 400kg of motor ther boys

hehe i think you'd need an army of blokes to lift an EA....
