Ive been reading the Wheels December issue lately, and one question keeps bugging me: They tested the Chrysler 300C vs holden Caprice vs Ford Fairmont Ghia.
Why didnt Wheels test the Ford Fairlane V8 instead of a Fairmont?
The 300C and Caprice are both a lot more different from the base models than the Fairmont, which is essentially a stretched falcon ( i know the 300C doesnt have a base model it was derived from). The Caprice is completely different from a normal commodore, as is the Fairlane and LTD, so why use a Fairmont?, The article says that the fairlane is more refined etc. but its still too closely linked to the XT, well if theyd chosen an LTD (the ford equivalent of a Caprice, as the Fairlane is the same level as a Statesman). i guess the Caprice needs all the bragging rights it can get. But the 300C looks pretty flash, like a mob car.

Thats a wierd comparison.

As you say, the Caprice and LTD are Holden and Ford's long wheel base limos, while the Fairmont is Ford's equivilant to the Calais which are just optioned out Falcons and Commos.

I don't see the relevance in comparing cars that are obviously in such different leagues.

I'd say because the 300C is half way in size between the Ghia and Caprice, and the price basically opens it up either way between them. I think they decided to choose a SWB and a LWB to put against the 300C because it gives 2 of its most likely competitors a go against it, as the Caprice is considered a better car than the Fairlane and the Ghia is a better car than the Calais.
