Remember a little while ago when MOTOR reported that Ford admitted that they had been caught offguard with the Holden SV8 and that they were planning a SOHC version of the XR8 that looks like an XR6 (re: no bonnet bulge) and puts out 230kW via a less restrictive exhaust.
well, why has this car not been released yet? there are plenty of bulgeless bonnets around and plenty of SOHC V8s so why havent ford put one into and XR6 body changed the badges and got it on the market yet? the only thing i can think of is that they dont want people getting confused between this and the real-deal BOSS XR8. Either that or they cant think of a name for it.
Personally i like XT8 but it cant be called that because its an XR. Thats why i called it XR8-S in the subject heading but even it doesnt sound right (makes it sound like it is actually better than the real XR8, like XR8-special or XR8-sprint or something)
so here is the challenge: think of a name for the XR8 junior that sound TUFF with a capital T but still includes the letters XR and most probably 8. Here are my sugestions:
They haven't released it because they are not going to release anything of the sort, and don't need to. XRs are doing fine, releasing this sort of thing would be an expensive distraction.
With the amount of money going into the current development line, and then future planning of enhancements and 2004 release, I dont see the need of another model.
I think the XR will be the saviour of the Ford line up and the name will never be changed!
obviously none of you have read MOTOR December addition.
I quote (from MOTOR's "HotBits" column in the "Extra!Extra!" section at the start of the magazine:
"FORD XR8 JUNIOR"
While the war rages, the first
battle victory goes to Holden.
Sources inside Ford admit
that, by giving the 235kW SV8
Commodore and entry price of
$40,490, Holden outsmarted
them. Ford's answer will be a
new V8 model positioned below
the XR8 in price and power. Try
mid-$40 grand with an estimated
230kW. It is believed Ford easily
extracted another 10kW from the
SOHC, three-valve 5.4-litre V8
through exhaust tuning.
The hardest job may be conjuring
up a name. Neither XR6+ or XR8-
seems approriate but thats
where the new model performance
model will sit. Anyway, its styling
should be more XR6 than bonnet-
bulging XR8 because the shorter
SOHC V8 sits under than standard
Falcon bonnet."

Now do you believe me?
Call it clever journalism...
"Ford's answer will be a new V8 model positioned below the XR8 in price and power"
If Ford had actually said that, it would of read...
"Ford have confirmed the new V8 model positioned below the XR8 in price and power"
The way they structured the sentence, gives the impression that is exactly what Ford's answer is, but in all honesty, thats just the writer making that stuff up (excpet for Ford admitting they got outsmarted).
