just curious... why'd u pick Ford over Holden?

VN deserves credit for being a working, largely-new car over the VL conceived on a budget normally reserved for mid-life facelifts. It is one of the quickest stock Australian cars of all time, alarming economical, and good on the highway. The size was right too, which was the whole point of the exercise.

Why I didn't buy one: refinement is non-existent compared to the EA, Holden prices are absurd (I couldn't even afford a VH SL/E or something for what I paid for the EA) and the VN as a whole will be a much more tinny car. The fact that it was based on the smaller VL chassis and carried over its narrow front suspension, and the decision to change from the Nissan six to the Buick V6 during its conception resulted in a fairly crude car that would take a few years to become worthy of consideration. The later VNs were much improved.

Having said that, no Holden-bashing please.

hahaha
and the fact that the rear end looks like a pigs arse...
i piss myself laughing when i see a VN on 6"wide rims. ITS SO WRONG!

Well they do look like one of the aircraft off The Thunderbirds :p

I was looking at buying a commo, but after driving the falcon, i couldnt justify spending twice as much on something of the same, if not lesser, standard.

And i think they (falcons) look better aswell :)

Id always be a bit dodgy buying a commo given the thrashed reputation they have around here. :)

my dad had a new VN SS V8. practically the first one off the production line. he kept it one year.
the year earlier he had bought a new ZL fairlane. we had that up till 1999 when he purchased an EL.
why did he keep the fairlane and not the VN? insurance and the risk of it being stolen. he couldnt park it anywhere. sat in the driveway.

after that experience in the family, there was no way i was buying a VN.

Because I couldn't justify paying the huge $$$ difference between the my EB2 Ghia and a VP Calais....

Not to mention that I loved the look of the EB ever since I saw one new back in 92 when my mother bought a 92 KH Ghia.....

Besides let the idiots out there drive them...

Cheers

Because I work in Broadmeadows, (near St. Albans/Sunshine... eh) I didn’t want to have to catch a taxi home after every shift and buy a new car the next day.
Also by buying an EA so I could get out of that hellhole as quickly as possible (before I get shot by some punk in a stolen commo).

driving position and comfort, the VN's make you sit down like a homey and the steering wheel is uncomfortable.
I don't like the dash the instrument cluster blocks the use of any of the vents for the driver.
The interior looks cheap and falls apart in the examples I've seen.
The motor sounds like it's gonna explode at high reves and the throttle reaches 100% after about 1 inch.
They are twitchy to drive and the motors last to about 150,000kms (waits for the wingers with 300,000km commies)
Very difficult motors to work and don't respond to mods well from my experience.
The Falcon on the other hand is smooth, quiet, actully sounds ok when rev'd looks brillent, the manuals put many cars to shame and still have heaps and heaps of potential.
Fords have nearly always been a better base for mods than the holdens and while commies are normally quicker out of the box they reach their limits pretty quickly (now waits for the flog with the 600hp buick POS to piss and moan)

I bought my ED because I was originally looking for an EF/EL Fairmont with low kilometres. I never wanted to step below Fairmont. Don't ask me why. But the price were a bit too high for my liking so the ED was logical. I got mine at 122006 km for $10,000. Now it's gone over 136500.

In Melbourne they seem to hold more in value than other places don't know why but maybe because they built them here?

You're talking about Thunderbird 2, the fat green aircraft.

I never liked the VNs. Don't know why. They just looked odd at the time. The early E-series had a more refined smoother look IMO. Oldies used to have an EB and that convinced me also. But the caryard pictures of the car on my website did it for me!

because I prefer the falcon 6 to the holden V6 even though i drive V8. I was looking for a 6 when i brought the V8. I think the E series falcons are a much better car allround than the holdens & you get more car for your buck

Well I didnt like Ford or Holden better than the other, till I got my first car, a 1973 Ford Cortina, after that I became pro Ford, my brother got a Torana, so became a bit of thing of Ford vs Holden, so I only like Ford, some great holdens running around though, but I will stick with Ford.

where do i start
well firstly i find the fords a hell of a lot nicer to drive fords feel like a solid car. iv driven and been in commodores that feel like they are about to crumble apart. one of the best tests for me was when my dad brought home a new vt (company car) after we had just bought an au falcon. the falcon was more comfortable nicer to drive and just an all round better car. Dad found my 93 fairlane ghia better than his updated vx commodore company car! Not to mention most ppl who drive vns r bogans.

I was given my mums old EA to drive around in until I could afford my next car (which happened to be my EBII). After experiencing no problems with the EA for 1.5 years I was convinced that a later E-series was the only way to go, plus the fact that my dad would have disowned me if I bought a VN or VP. VN's have an advantage over a stock E-series in a straight line, but thats about it. Far too lively rear end, shoddy engine, appalling NVH levels, and a very uneasy front end convinced me that a Henry was the way to go.

Well the only reason I ended up with an EA is because I was looking for an EF\L XR6 manuel but couldn't find n found this EA that was manuel. Also I didn't really like the look or the feel of the holden's that were in my price range...

yeah i basically agree with all of the above

Price is a huge factor when you consider both cars are relatively equal from a non-biased point of view, so i cant justify the extra dollars

not to mention the fact that while an EA may suffer headgasket problems ( usually due to poor maintenance anyway ) the VN was a rush job. As jack mentioned, the decision to change to the buick derived V6 so late in the production of the VN killed what probably would have been a much better car. I dont care how quick the thing is to 60km/h I just cant get over the VN shudder, absolutely horrible for a car of the late 80's, even when ford decided to shoe-horn a x-flow 6 into the humble cortina, it turned out a smoother car!
Overall the falcon is a smoother, more comfortable, sure-footed car compared to the VN, besides, if I drove a VN id have to scrape my knuckles along the road, no thanks id prefer to sit in a roomy, comfortable, well designed interior
