A XR8 test drive

as posted at ls1 forum

First impressions, very good, the bulge didnt do a great deal for me walking around the car, engine bay looked good (then again I looked at the one at summernats)..

Salesman drove it out while explaining some features, gave it a few bootfulls, and pulled over and let me have a drive just across the bridge,80kzone

Impressions as a passenger: I now see why the bulge is such a big issue, it sets the car off beautifully. Seats are very supportive, sound system, well sounds good. The exhaust is impressive, no keep in mind none of my gen 111s have been modded in any way.

Got to drive it, started easily and loved the burble, going thru a roundabout, had to wait for a slow gramps, then booted around him. Going up the lookout hill, in 3rd (had to give the shift a go) comeing around a left hand bend overtaking a car at 140 I felt what I initially thought was the rev limiter, but was actually the traction control,,,very surprised, a lot less intrusive than the holden one. Chucked a uey and headed back to town, only a 14k round trip.

Impressions as a driver: I loved how even if you are in 3rd and come to a stop, the box changes to 1st to allow you to take off, but as you are in manual mode it stays in first untill you shift it. Power delivery was excellent, I love the low down grunt, I took the car through a couple of back streets and had the t/c working a fair bit, and all I can say is... Holden, copy fords t/c, its a heap better than yours.......

Overall: Very very impressed, would I buy one, lets say I am awaiting a phone call and if the changeover price is good enough then the answer will be yes.

Great to see you finally found one to take out mate! Sounds like you were suitably impressed as well :s6:

Thanks for the report, always great to get a drive opinion from the "Dark Side". Time I harrassed motomk into getting a spin in one again...

changeover is $15000, so thanks but no thanks

VY SS A4, Red plus red leather/side airbags,1600 towpack
trade in $41,000

XR8 Red auto, cloth seats, premium sound $56298 drive away
Ford need to do better than this, I expected a trade in of around $47 to $48, and a deal would have been done. At least the holden dealers know how to do a decent changeover price,
I dropped $4000 over 4 months on a VX11 SS traded on a CV8, then dropped $7000 over 7 months on a CV8 traded on the VY SS, and ford want me to drop $14000 over 6 months. sorry, just not good enough, sounds like a touch of arrogance from the trade in valuers. and FYI the VX11SS had 14000km, the CV8 had 22000 and the VY SS has 21500km.
All I can say is ford have lost an opportunity to convert a staunch holden supporter to a ford and my next new car will be a holden again. Not a anice way to treat a cash buyer....

I don't see it this way, I traded in my vx11 SS commodore for a xr6t which I pick up next tuesday, I had to pay $13500 changeover. It will have 40000kms on it. When I bought my falcon Ford don't really care. If you don't buy a car off them, the next person who walks in will. They don't really care if you buy or not.

As I said, arrogance from the trade in valuer, they dont need the sale so they arent willing to offer a decent trade.. hey, I dont need a new car, the simple fact that I have had 3 new cars privately in 11 months all costing $50000 or more should earmark me as a serious multiple buyer, this xr8 would not have been the last new car I bought, altho now it wont be the first ford. So ford havent just lost this one sale, they have lost a BA2 sale (probably stepped up to a GTP)
Im guessing your SS is close to 12 months old so you have dropped approx $1000 per month, that is what I have done on my last 2 new cars, and what I expected on this one, but dropping $14000 on a 6 month old VY SS with 21500km is to much...

So the shoe is on the other foot now.Recent experience(pre BA) buying an SS with my brother the holden dealers did the same thing.

Ever thought of trying another dealer?
I know the one up here would be interested in talking to you.

Good to see you finally got a drive of the XR8.

Would be worth giving another dealer a try (perhaps get some names of preferred dealers around your area off the members here).

But as a matter of interest and comparison, any chance of getting a trade quote for your SS from a Holden dealer. Would be interesting to see if, or by how much, they can better the $41,000 (not to mention it may give you some ammo when confronting the Ford dealers).
