I would dearly love to get one of these in half-decent shape and rebuild it from the ground up. But where do you find them?
I'm in Melbourne and I hear they should be easy to get but so far I can't find any dealers or any second hand, aside from ones that have been done up and are selling for $50k.
I assume you mean a Falcon GT?
Your best policiy is look, ask, hassle
Keep an eye on the GT club websites, or get in contact with the clubs.
Set up searches in the trading post, car point etc etc. It really is a matter of just being in the right place at the right time.
PM me with what your after, budget etc, and I'll keep an eye out for you.

It's very hard to find one in the condition that you ask for, that's the problem, I've been looking for a while now and I think we may just have to settle for one that has been restored,I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has told me they know were a GT is just sitting in the padock, every time I went to check them out they turned out to be 500's.just keep looking.

As XWGT said, check The Trading Post and through the Clubs. These are usually the best places to start.

Ok, I admit, I'm confused. I thought the Falcon 500 WAS a GT?
As for looking, thanks, but I'm not quite looking right now. It's sortof a dream of mine to find one and rebuild it and eventually do it up to the condition like I saw this (I think) XY GT today in Preston. Man that looked awesome. The same colour scheme I want mine to be too, white with black trimmings.
Anyway, point is, I was more looking for information on where to 'start the search'. In other words, it's a long term project :)
I think in XW and XY the models were
FALCON
FALCON 500
FUTURA
FAIRMONT
and
FALCON GT
tho perhaps futura was introduced for XY?
"Falcon" model was cheapest fleet/povo pack. 500 was owner buyer car, futura and fairmont were two top models. GT was based on falcon (not 500 or futura) to save weight.

Thanks for the advice.
Ok so your still in research mode?
Some places that will show you all you need to know about the Falcon GT include
Within those you will find more links to historical documents etc.
You will also find cars for sale within clubs (not many are advertised, they are sold by word of mouth etc)
Apart from that, just look look look, and be prepared to travel interstate.
If you find something you like interstate, there are people who will assess the car for you before hand (save you the trip for a dud), and most cars are known within the clubs, so plenty of people to ask about the history of a car.
But before you buy one, make sure you check out the ID tag decoder at www.fomoco.com.au to ensure you know what numbers your looking for, and where they should be located.
Good luck with it
Cheers

Thanks man. The ID thing is a great tool, as I've been warned that there are a lot of fake GT's out there. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to buy I'll be a lot more savvy about the whole thing, especially with all those links :)

The GT was based on a Fairmont, not a Falcon 500.

Yep GT based on fairmont. Futura was introduced XW, has the futura badges on rear quarter from memory. You forgot the GS Fairmont too.
There was an XW GT, phase 1 i think at the southern swap meet. 351W auto. Pretty bad for rust, looked like it had been under a tree for years. They wanted $11,000 on the 1st day, dropped to $7000 by the last. Would have been good buying, but a lot of work to fix her up.
