1967 C4 first gear problem

I have a problem with the C4 transmission in my 1967 Mustang that I would appreciate help with.

When the transmission is cold first gear will not engage. Reverse works fine. I have to let it run for a few minutes and then it will go and there is never another problem once it goes as long as it is warm.

Thanks for any assistance.

Re: 1967 C4 first gear problem

Might be due for a rebuild and a new converter, how's the fluid look? Being warm is part of the clue, if the pump in the coverter is shot or the fluid contaminated, or the filter is beginning to plug, the warmer fluid's viscosity will thin somewhat making it easier to build pressure. Try changing the fluid and filter first to see if it alleviates the problem.

Ever notice that there's so many high performance parts available for GM products?

Did you ever think that maybe they NEED them?

Have you checked the fluid level on the transmission dipstick. This usually needs to be done when the transmission is warmed up and the engine idleing while the transmission is in park.

If the trans needs topping up then be sure to use the correct auto trans fluid.

Thanks for the comments.

I dont think it is the converter because always works in reverse right away. Unless there is something I dont know????

The fluid level is good.

Thanks again for your help.

If the Trans hasn't been overhauled in a while the seals could be dried out. When cold the forward piston seal is probably leaking not allowing the clutch to apply. Once the fluid warms the seals soften and will apply the clutch
